But with the huge number of choices, this task can quickly become more overwhelming and time-consuming than you expected! However, the right mouthwash <em>can<\/em> improve your oral health and help you minimize the amount of dental work you need from a family dentist, so it\u2019s well worth it to figure out which product to use. Keep reading to learn more so you won\u2019t waste time in the store making a decision ever again!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What Kind of Mouthwash Should You Use?<\/h2>\n<p>This might sound obvious, but the best mouthwash for you depends on your specific needs. Most people could benefit from using mouthwash each day, but everyone\u2019s dental health is different.<\/p>\n<p>Start by asking yourself which of the following oral health issues you\u2019re trying to improve or prevent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cavities <\/strong>\u2013 For cavity prevention, a fluoride (also called anti-cavity) mouthwash is very helpful. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens your teeth, much like calcium strengthens your bones. Although fluoride is in most toothpaste, it gets rinsed away immediately, so it\u2019s helpful to get an extra \u201ccoating.\u201d Just be sure not to rinse with water after using a fluoride mouthwash.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bad breath <\/strong>\u2013 Nearly any mouthwash will have flavoring that temporarily improves bad breath. But some products are <em>only<\/em> designed to freshen the breath and don\u2019t have the \u201cburn\u201d of alcohol, which can be great when you simply want something minty and mild. However, if you have chronic or persistent bad breath, you may need a mouthwash designed to kill bacteria and treat inflamed gums (see below).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bleeding, swollen, or tender gums<\/strong> \u2013 These are all signs of inflamed gums (also called gingivitis), which is important to address before it progresses to later stages of gum disease. You\u2019ll want a mouthwash that kills bacteria, so look for a product that says \u201cantiseptic,\u201d \u201canti-bacterial,\u201d or that it treats gingivitis on the label.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moderate or Severe Gum Disease<\/strong> \u2013 Beyond early-stage gingivitis, gum disease can\u2019t be cured. However, it can be managed to keep it from progressing. If you have gum disease, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longfamilydental.com\/dental-services.html\">dentist<\/a> will recommend the best tools and products to use at home and may prescribe a prescription-strength mouthwash (called chlorhexidine) to be used for just 2 weeks at a time. This rinse targets the specific type of bacteria that causes gum disease.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multiple issues <\/strong>\u2013 There are also \u201call-in-one\u201d options that combine multiple benefits in the same formula. Just experiment to find the one that works best for you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What\u2019s the Best Way To Use Mouthwash?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s important to keep in mind that mouthwash is only a great <em>addition<\/em> to your oral hygiene routine. It definitely cannot take the place of brushing and flossing, which is far more important for your oral health.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, the right mouthwash can help you maximize your efforts at home.
