{"id":18,"date":"2012-11-12T14:25:36","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T14:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.longfamilydental.com\/?p=18"},"modified":"2012-11-12T15:18:19","modified_gmt":"2012-11-12T15:18:19","slug":"18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.longfamilydental.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/12\/18\/","title":{"rendered":"Link Between Diabetes and Oral Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The American Diabetes Association has named November as American Diabetes Month.\u00a0 It is important to be aware of how your oral health is related if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), there is research that suggests a link between diabetes and gum disease.\u00a0 People with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections in general.\u00a0 Gum disease is often a complication of diabetes, making consistent dental care even more important for diabetes patients.<\/p>\n<p>Research also indicates gum disease makes it challenging for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar. Depending on the severity of the gum disease, it can increase blood sugar in the body, which contributes to times when the body would function with higher blood sugar.\u00a0 This puts people with diabetes at increased risk for diabetic complications.<\/p>\n<p>The AAP recommends the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep your blood glucose under control<\/li>\n<li>Brush your teeth twice daily<\/li>\n<li>Floss your teeth daily<\/li>\n<li>Look for early signs of gum disease (bleeding when you brush or swollen gums)<\/li>\n<li>Visit your dentist twice a year at a minimum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Long Family Dental <\/strong>focuses on total body health, so when our patients have certain health conditions, such as diabetes, we make certain their customized treatment plan is designed specifically to their needs.\u00a0 If you or someone you know has diabetes at any level, make sure regular dental care is part of the overall health treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American Diabetes Association has named November as American Diabetes Month.\u00a0 It is important to be aware of how your oral health is related if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
